The Petition Results
(But
it's only a beginning !!!)
Please, speak about the petition all around you,
to pump up this result ! Use email, forums, whatever you want,... because I
know that many BTTF and Alan Silvestri fans don't know about the petition yet and
they all need to be informed. Thanks for the help and the support of those who contacted
me, and thanks for all kind of help to come from all of you ! I will never be fed
up to say this again : You're all great, and I'm the first to be astonished
by your passion for the BTTF score !
Many many thanks to Didier Leprêtre, Emile Brinkman,
Bob Gale
and
Alan Silvestri ! ;-)
NEWS
01/03 : Last december,
the signatures and words you sent were given in Alan
Silvestri's hands and were transmitted to MCA and Varese
Sarabande, thanks to Didier Leprêtre who interviewed
Alan Silvestri for Dreams Magazine, specialized in film
music.
The
BTTF Crew Speak :
The Back to the Future Trilogy compilation was made to compensate
the lack of a true score edition. It's very hard to buy the rights, owned by
MCA, in order to release a new album without the sucessful songs by Huey Lewis.
No one took the risk, including me. The BACK TO THE FUTURE Part II album was
a selling failure, rectified by the third episode which was helped by ZZ Top.
So we are trapped, because if this album ever sees the light of day, it
will be destined to a small group of passionate people, like with the recent
ROMANCING THE STONE limited edition, and it won’t satisfy the commercial obligations.
Perhaps the DVD edition will get things going. Bob and I couldn’t do
a thing with the music on the Trilogy set. But if the DVD selling results are
huge, it could make them realize that there’s a potential. So the petition must go
on !
Alan Silvestri
I doubt of any chance of getting the score from Part I released on CD. (I'd be the first one to buy it!) But there's no money in those
soundtracks, part of the reason being that the union contracts for repaying the
musicians are very cost prohibitive.
Bob Gale (Producer
and Screenwriter of BTTF)
The Signers Speak :
Many of
you (from all over the world : England, Brazil, Germany, France,
Sweden, USA, Poland, Belgium, Canada, Netherlands, Spain,
Australia,…) sent me really passionate words about
this BTTF dreamed edition. I would like to present here some of
the most encouraging suggestions and all kind of interesting
commentaries and personal anecdotes I received.
Thanks
to all of you, and please continue in that way !
The fact that the Back to the Future score isn't released yet
demonstrates how twisted the world can be sometimes. Back to the Future is
one of the most famous films of all times (who hasn't seen it?) The Back to
the Future theme is also one of the most famous and memorable movie themes
ever. And furthermore it's one of Alan Silvestri's most important scores, if
not THE most important (Silvestri being a major composer). And still it
isn't released...
I don't think we must focus our energy on
MCA/Universal. But it would be better to focus our energy on Varèse. They
care about film music. For them it's not only about dollars. Maybe the label
who releases the score wouldn't make a huge profit out of it. But the
potential international Back to the Future community is so huge that they
will make a profit out of it on the long term of course. AND from a public
relations standpoint it would be a very smart move because everyone knows how
difficult it is to get this from the ground. In my opinion MCA's persistent
attitude of not releasing it, is a classic example of very bad PR policy. The
longer they keep this score locked from the world because of vague and
selfish reasons the more people will get to know about this and are starting
to become irritated towards MCA. Not very smart to say the least. Especially
because I believe they will make a profit out of it, although probably not
huge. And if they don't release it: they will lose a potential profit and
they will continue to build up their reputation as a selfish company. In
short, they will only lose from it.
And which label doesn't want the
prominent Back to the Future score on its list of releases??
E.B
I have
grown up with BTTF, and it was one of the scores that got me into
soundtrack collecting. When I picked up the soundtrack album when
I was 13, even at that time I was disappointed that it contained
little of the additive score music. This release would fulfill a
childhood dream for me.
Matt
I agree completely that
this score deserves such a release. I think Varese
Sarabande should jump in and release it as a club CD. If
DIE HARD received the treatment, then I think BTTF is just as
worthy, of not more! This is one of the scores that gave
Alan Silvestri his big break and should be treated better than 12
mins. of score w/songs or 25 mins. of re-recorded score. It
would also be a great celebration item for the long-awaited DVD
release!
David
There
are many times when a score that is viable enough to warrant
release still doesn't see the light of day. This is a perfect
example!
It's
about time Alan Silvestri has his work (That got me into his work
to begin with, and would wager many others can say the same as
well) released and in legitimate form at that.
Enough
with the "money is all mentality", let's appreciate the
art too. Here's hoping more of Mr. Silvestri's work (Predator
included) can be released. If there's demand for a score, then
release it. It's that simple! This score being what I consider
Silvestri's "first major" score, deserves such
treatment for this fact alone and how the composer has
transcended other composers to actually be one worth following.
Give him the respect he deserves! Thanks!
Sean
Yes, I
would like the BTTF "Complete" sound track.
Alan is a gifted composer who must be heard!
I was in the Berklee College of Music w/Alan and I knew then, he
was destined for greatness.
Dennis
A complete score to BTTF
would be the pinnacle of musical accomplishments from the
esteemed composer, Alan Silvestri.
He is by far, one of the best musical writers, arrangers, and
composers who have been acknowledged in the field of film music.
John
I have
the bootleg version of this score, however, it is lacking in
dynamic sound quality and being complete. A complete, remastered
version of this score would be a true gift to the film score
collecting community of which I am proud to be a member of.
Scott
I really
agree that there should be a complete score, so I sign this
petition to make clear that there MUST be a score of one of the
best soundtracks ever!
Peter
I'd actually like it if
they gave ALL the Back to the Future scores complete releases.
And Varese may just be the ones to do it. After all, they have
done a couple of the releases. The BTTF trilogy could get the
same "Deluxe Edition" treatment that the Omen trilogy
did.
Yavar
Please
bring "Back to the Future" back from the past and
deliver it to the present.
Steve
A
complete remastered issue of Alan Silvestri´s score is long
overdue. I welcome your effort with this petition and hope for
all of us who love this score that it will get things to move out
there in the music business.
Markus
M.
I'm a soundtrack lover.
I would love a complete score release of one of the best scores
of the 1980s, Alan Silvestri's "Back to the Future". In
my opinion, the MCA soundtrack and the Varese re-recording just
don't cut it. I very much hope that this becomes a reality very
soon.
Tor
Here's a
contribution from Australia. How this score has not received an
expanded release is a crime.
Rick
I sign
the BACK TO THE FUTURE score release petition. It's one of my
favourite score and the first in my heart. And why not a complete
score in 3 CD box of the trilogy :-)
Frédéric
Please release the
complete score for BACK TO THE FUTURE. Your listed features for
the release are very nice...I think that would be good.
Markus W.
We want
the complete, unaltered and remastered Alan Silvestri score to
BACK TO THE FUTURE. Message to Universal/MCA Records: most
of us score fans are well aware that there is a rather extensive
bootleg CD of this score available, with minimal research, over
the Internet, so it is imperative that you authorize production
of a new, official release soon, and that you do not drop the
ball by neglecting to add in ALL music tracks available for the
title, since many consumers will still seek out the bootleg if a
new official release is edited down. Thank you for your
efforts.
Travis
One of
my all time favorite scores, sadly though, it's representation in
the public is poor.
Glenn
The sound clips of the Varese re-recording only
strengthen my belief that only a proper score album of the first
film will do (and none of this limited edition promo stuff either
- commercially available ONLY thank you!).
Victor
I've got the scores from the
three movies and I really enjoy the music.
Please MCA release it!
José-Ramon
Back to the Future is a film
music that speaks directly to my heart. I´m a pianist and
composer and I have a dream of composing orchestral music for
films. I´m already working on it in my home studio for
portfolio, so maybe some day I will do a real piece of art as the
score of Back to the Future. Yes! Off course I would like to have
not only the audio CD release, but also a full orchestra score
printed, so that I may read, study, and apreciate each one of the
notes that this genius composer wrote. He is one of the mans that
keep my dream alive, specially when I´m listening to his music.
Rafael
I am a huge film score fanatic
and a huge fan of the "Back to the Future trilogy" and
I love the score that Mr. Silvestri composed for the films. I
sign this in hope that it will help to get an official release of
every piece of music he created for these films to be release in
a deluxe collectors edition just like RCA/Victor did for the Star
Wars Trilogy. After all, Silvestri is considered as one of the best
composers out there and is right up there with the great John
Williams. Silvestri has created one of the most famous film
themes ever. Who ever hears it knows what movie it's from.
So to Universal/MCA, Varese Sarabande, or to whom ever. If Disney
Records in conjunction with Wendy Carlos (The composer) could get
the score to "Tron" remastered for the 20th Anniversary
DVD release of "Tron" and released on CD for the first time.
Then why can't someone work with Mr.Silvestri to create what fans
of the "Back to the Future Trilogy" want? We know he
would be willing to help out. My god, if they can release
Silvestri's score to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", they
can do it for one of the biggest and beloved series in history!
After all, The score had to be remastered for the upcoming DVD
release. Why not go one step further and put it out on CD. I
apologize for being long winded. :-)
Christopher
I have always been a fan of not only BTTF but of Alan Silvestri ever since I
could remember, I have just about all of his scores that I could find and was
greatly sadden to see that the soundtrack to BTTF only had two tracks with
Silvestri's amazing score, I would LOVE to have the privilege to hear the entire
score from Silvestri!
Simon
One of the most memorable scores of 1980s.
So how we justify it being forgotten? Answer : we can't. My advice to the record
companies is to get this complete score recorded and start shipping out promo
material to coincide with the DVD release.
Charles
I have a dream - Back To The Future Complete Motion Picture Score.
Stanislav
I would really really really like a complete score to Back to the
Future. In fact, I'd love to see the complete score to ALL THREE movies, but
maybe that's just a tad too much to ask. Anyway, I would really appreciate it if
these calls are heard and we get a complete score soon.
Marc
Alan Silvestri is one of my favorite composers, and his Back to the Future score
is among his very best. I would love to see such talent done justice with a
release as described in this petition, and would most definitely purchase such a
product.
Christopher
Alan Silvestri's scores for the Back to the Future movies are
simply magnificent. The time has come to make them available to everyone. I
would certainly buy them and highly recommend them to everyone who loves film
music.
Scott
I would like the complete score to this film on CD. I like it a lot, and
I would most definitely buy this score on CD in a heartbeat. So,
Universal should get the message and work on a complete score CD for this
film.
TServo
I'm from Germany, and I consider myself a huge Silvestri-Fan, simply
because in my opinion he's a fantastic composer. "Back to the Future" was
the first soundtrack I've ever bought, and since then I've always been
looking for a complete release of the score, so of course I'll gladly sign
this petition. Not to mention, that this is a great idea anyway! It's good
to realize, that there are still some people who do their best in order to
achieve something. Thus I hope, this petition will be successful. I'm already looking forward to have the complete "Back to
the Future"-Soundtrack in my collection one day; if not for my sake, then at
least to witness how Silvestri's music is blessed with the treatment it
really deserves.
Damar
Why I must sign a petition for ORIGINAL SCORE... and I can't simply go
in
store and buy it ?
Fabio
My personal love for music and cinema springs from every Silvestri's Bttf
theme note. Thinking about the entire score is like thinking about a life
dream. And I need this dream to finally become reality.
Giuliano
The score to "Back to the Future" is one of the most amazing scores written
of all time, for one of the centuries groundbreaking films. I'm sure it
upsets tons of other as well as myself, that the music for this movie has
never been officially released so we can all enjoy the amazing experience of
the movie through Alan Silvestri's great score, without actually watching
the movie. This score is certainly the most worthy score of an official
release out of anything. It doesn't matter to me who releases it, but that
it actually gets released.
Jason
This score by Alan Silvestri deserves a full version release, and
I'm glad, as a pianist, conductor and composer to sign this petition.
Philippe
Alan Silvestri's score for Back to the Future has remained one of the true Holy
Grails for film music fans everyhere for far too long. A release of the
complete, original score would be analagous to hitting 88 in a Delorean, in that
it would instantly transport me back to one of the greatest times in my
life.
Doug
The music from the Back to The Future movies was the
music that got me into loving film scores. I fully agree that it should have a
decent release. I for one would certainly buy it!
Darren
Back to the future is a great score, possibly
the best of the 3 BTTF.
It needs a magnificent release. Without it, the
2 other scores are orphans as it established the basis for them. I would be a happy man if this CD was released
and I'm sure I'm not the only one... William
I was about eight, I think. My father sat down with me and told me that this was
a movie he remembered watching with my uncle. What he showed me was the first
Back to the Future movie, and from moment #1, I was thunderstruck. Not only by
the images, but by the score. Much later I eventually bought the "Music Inspired
by..." album, finding it deeply dissatisfying, with the exception of the two
score exerpts. I now watch the movie religiously about once a month, and have
long since fallen in love with the music. Please, please, don't let me/ us (oh,
yeah, there's lots of us) resort to bootlegs. Do the BTTF-community a huuge
favor, and surprice us with a really special release. Please?
Truls
With the upcoming DVD release of the complete Back to the Future trilogy in
December, it would be a missed opportunity for MCA not to release the full
scores to all three BTTF films.
It was - and still is - difficult to jump
back and forth from one album to another to listen to specific cues of music
that were found on one album but not on another. This is the same thing that
happened with the scores to Superman and Superman II, until we got a full
release of the Superman score (and we're still waiting for full releases of the
other Superman scores as well). And the recent re-recording from Varese
Sarabande doesn't even begin to qualify.
We've got most of the battle won
with the upcoming DVDs. Let's get it completely won with the full scores as
heard in the actual films on CD.
Thanks,
Bill
Hello, I have a CLEAN copy of the BTTF
BOOTLEG CD but I wish for it to be released totally remastered and in its'
ENTIRETY!
Thank you,
Gonzalo
I love the music from the first BTTF film....crap I like all 3 of the films
music. I really wish that one of the major companies MCA or Varese would
put out the COMPLETE scores for all 3 BTTF films. I agree with alot of the
people who signed this petition and that MCA would have a missed opportunity
if they don't release a Complete Scoring of ALL the original music from all
3 Back To The Future films. I will definitely buy the Back To The Future
Trilogy Complete Score set if there is one released by MCA or Varese, and I
know I'm not the only one. So please yes bring all 3 BTTF Complete score
soundtracks out.
Trent
Like many of your petitioners, the
Back to the Future score helped to unlock my love of Film Scores. It's beyond
belief that such a foundational and inspiring work could lie unreleased. The
outcry on these pages alone should silence the "commercially unviable"
argument. Come on MCA, give Alan Silvestri and his fans their due!
Simon
This score would be the most treasured piece of
music that I own if it were ever to be realeased. I am hopeful that it will be
realeased sometime in the near future in its entirety.
Matt
Hi... Back To The Future
is one of my favourite films and, in my opinion, is one of the few science
fiction films that can stand the test of time in a way that films like Star Wars
don't. The soundtrack is a large part of the film's appeal. I think producing
a CD of the full score is an excellent idea but I don't think the suggested
track list is the best solution. Having one track for each of the musical
set-pieces in the film lacks continuity and I don't think the end result would
convey the magic of the film. My suggestion is to essentially reproduce the
entire score as a symphony-length work. Of course all the memorable crescendos
would be there but it would also provide a new edge to the music. In
particular, the scene immediately after George punches Biff would make an
excellent slow movement. Just a thought.
Kev
Hello!
I 'm 31 yrs. old...and a musician..(as well as
previous experience working within the Entertainment industry..working on
various movie sets in L.A.) Anyway... I just want to express that the
soundtrack/musical score of "Back to the Future" trilogy..OH MY GOD!! (I
LOVEIT!!) IT KICKS ASS!!! THAT MAN IS A BRILLIANT COMPOSER!! I wish there was
achance/opportunity to see this man conduct in a concert...does anyone have any
info ? on such an idea..or if he even has the time ot do so?!! What a treat that
would be!!
Sincerely,
Kerry-Ann
I have been a Fan of the BTTF movies since I was a
little kid. I remember humming the theme to it when I played with toy cars! So
as a score collector I can't imagine why this score hasn't been fully released
as so many other scores have that aren't even close to the Quality of
Silvestri's Back to the Future work! With the DVD's now out and so many scores
getting the treatment the deserve by various labels I think the time is right
for Back to the Future to make it's full score debut!
Jeremy
Why not just put the 2 Huey Lewis songs on the complete score release? Silvestri
said that was the main reason for the album selling in the first place. I
actually like the songs and at the most the complete score is only going to be
45 minutes, that leaves plenty of room for the Huey Lewis songs. In addition, if
MCA was really smart, they could have made an advertisement on the dvd itself
for the new anniversary edition soundtrack or whatever the hell they want to
call it. I can't imagine a more popular score at this moment that would sell
better. Back to the Future is one of the best films and scores from the 80s.
This music needs to be released and given the respect it deserves.
Jeff
Back to the Future is a great score... I've always liked it
since I was eight years old, when I first saw the movie. If this score is just
eventually lost and forgotten, then we've got some real trouble on our hands
friends. It's a masterpiece!
Seth
This is one of the most charming, refreshing films scores ever written!
In an age with so many forgettable film scores receiving release, it's a
real shame that such a masterwork has never been available. Congratulations
and honors to Alan Silvestri for such an essential contribution to
these wonderfully entertaining movies. I dare to say that they would not
have been as successful without your talents.
Michael
Hi, I'm Jim from Manchester England. I am currently a music student at
the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. I live my life for music, and I know that the BTTF score is a very
important piece of history and it
NEEDS to be released. With Parts 2 and 3 available on the shelves, it
makes sense. And it might finally stop people being disappointed
by that awful CD by the Scottish National
Orchestra!
Cheers.
Jim
I am waiting for a full release of the Back to the
Future movie since my young age. As a film music fan as much as a conductor
specialized in film music, I do hope that this score fill finaly become
available.
Philippe (Pianist/Conductor)
I was very surprised when I found out that the Back to the Future score was
not released on CD. In my opinion, it is absolutely, no question, one of THE
best scores in movie history. Both the movie and the score are just
fantastic. I would be ecstatic for it to be released on CD now that the
trilogy has been released to DVD. That would be an added
bonus!
Tracy
The Back to the Future score was a commercial project, but it also had/has a
dimension that would allow for learning about movie scores and music in general
if the copyright holders would consider releasing the score. It was a fantastic
project that can best be analysed with a authorised version of the score
- No-one would have dreamed of denying Sergei Prokoviefs, Rachmaninov's or
Gerhswin Brothers' music in a similar way and the BTTF score can be considered
to be equally important for learning in other muscial circles.
Andrew
The first time I ever noticed film music was with Back To The Future. I
enjoyed being able to hear Huey Lewis' songs...but was SORELY dissapointed
to be deprived of the fine score by Alan Silvestri. I think MCA is
seriously shortchanging themselves by not releasing this score. Romancing
The Stone (which is a much less known movie) had a soundtrack release and
was well recieved. Imagine, how well a release of one of the most
influential and monumental movies of all time could be recieved. This, and
the fact that many fans would love to hear the strains of the main theme as
Marty catapults into 1985, or when the DeLorean takes its first leap into
time-travel. These and so much more deserved to be heard by every fan of
movie scores. Please, see that this petition proves there is a significant
base to release the CD for.
Alex
There are a great many of us score lovers who hate when
one of our favorite movies only gets an "album" release full of the incidental
pop music rather than the actual score. Many record companies solved the
problem by releasing two versions: (Batman, Batman Forever, Armageddon,
Blade, Spiderman, to name a few) one cd with the popular songs and one with just
the score. Well now that the pop album has been released, the score fans would
also like a copy of the original BTTF score. Many other films have had
re-released cds: Abyss, Omen trilogy, Die Hard, and many others, and they
have been successful. Yes it is true there are bootlegs out on the market, but
that is because there is a need for these pieces of music. If there is an
official release, no one would want an illegal copy. Since the second and third
movies have a score album, it just seems right that the first should be released
as well. If not, it would seem as if only "The Two Towers" and "Return of the
King" would have soundtracks, but not "Fellowship of the Ring". The first movie
is essential to appreciate the second and third. So it is with the music.
Thank you for your time.
Barry
I remember when I first saw Star Wars and fell in
love
with it. One of the main reasons for that was the great soundtrack made by John
Williams. Nowadays, I'm a happy man with all the released music from the first
three films.
I also remember when I first saw Back to the
Future. I was surprised when I noticed that there could be another movie that
would have the same impact on me than SW had. Besides the great story,
charismatic actors and the beautiful DMC-12 automobile, it was the Alan
Silvestri's mighty score that blew my mind ! Challenged by John Williams' Star
Wars score, I personally find Silvestri's even more succeeded!
That's why I'm really disappointed with MCA
Records. They should have released a double CD with both the pop songs AND the
orchestral score. I find it really annoying when they sacrifice room from the
score music just to add a song that can be heard in the
backround for a short period of time and is more of an ambient than a soundtrack
piece (For an example, Time Bomb Town is playing on Marty's radio when Doc calls
him). The Huey Lewis songs are naturally part of
the soundtrack, plus they are good, but I can find that Eric Clapton song or
Etta James' piece from elsewhere if I need to.
Since the DVDs are selling good (and some people
have bought both R1 and R2, like I have) I guess it's time to finaly publish the
full score (re-mastered, of course) with some extras, if possible.
Alan Silvestri deserves it. Zemeckis & Gale
deserve it. Fans around the globe deserve it.
MCA - it's about time.
Joonas
Most of
the messages that don't appear on this page are this kind of
messages :
"Yes. PLEASE, PLEASE,
PLEASE produce the complete original score to Back To The
Future!!!" (Randall)
And be
sure that it’s the best encouragement you can provide :-)
Just go on ! Again you're just all great ! Thank You !
By the way, I want to insist (as many of you said) on
the fact that all the bootleg CD versions of the BTTF score that are findable throughout the
net, are simply chaotic (track disorder, bad sound, a dozen of missing cues)
and would never represent the magnificent Alan Silvestri score properly...
So an official edition is needed !
If you don't want
your message to appear on this page, or if you want it to be corrected, please send me an email .
